Process description

We can see that the adsorption bed of oxygen separation from air by pressure swing adsorption device must contain at least two steps: adsorption (under higher pressure) and desorption (under lower pressure), and cyclical repetition of the operation. Thus, when there is only one adsorption bed, the oxygen product is intermittent. In order to obtain oxygen product continuously, usually more than two adsorption beds are set up in oxygen producing devices; and from the perspective of energy saving, consumption reducing and smooth operation, we set up some necessary assistant steps, such as even pressure, oxygen rinse and so on.

Generally speaking, each adsorption bed must experience adsorption, forward pressure reduction, evacuation or regeneration after decompression, rinsing and replacement, even pressure and boost such steps; and they are in a cyclical repetition of operation (take the two towers VPSA oxygen producing process for example, are shown in Table 1). At the same time, each of the adsorption bed is at different steps; under the control of computer, they switch regularly to make several adsorption beds operate coordinately; their paces are staggered in time so that the oxygen separation from air by pressure swing adsorption device can run smoothly to produce oxygen continuously.

According to the desorption pressure, there are two kinds methods to separate oxygen from air by pressure swing adsorption process as following:

PSA technology: pressurized adsorption (0.2~0.6MPa), atmospheric desorption. PSA process has simple equipment and small investment but with low oxygen producing rate and high-energy consumption. It is suitable for small-scale oxygen producing occasions (normal <200m3/h).

VPSA Process: adsorption under atmospheric or slightly above atmospheric pressure (0 ~ 50Kpa), vacuum pump desorption (-50 ~ -80KPa). Compared with PSA process, VPSA has complex process equipment and high investment, but with high efficiency and low energy consumption, suitable for larger occasions of oxygen producing.

As for the actual separation process, we must also consider other trace components in the air. The adsorbent capacity in general adsorbent of carbon dioxide and water usually is bigger than that of nitrogen and oxygen, thus we can add suitable adsorbent in adsorption bed (or use the oxygen producing adsorbent itself) to make it adsorbed and removed.
